Picture
In commemoration of the centennial celebration of the standards organization, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, Hugh is designing and building a souvenir art box that combines historical ideas of miniature Victorian theaters with modern technology, using LEDs and small sound devices to create an evocative experience for the individual.

The art boxes will be prepared for the SMPTE conference in Hollywood, October 2015. Support SMPTE by bidding on one at the silent auction!

Handmade

From a tradition of Victorian era handmade theatrical forms, intersecting with miniature sound and LED technology.

Art and Tech

Each box has a soundscape emerging from a small audio chip that combines sounds of old film projectors with instrumental recordings that animate the 1kHz sine tone associated with the SMPTE standard color bars.

Livingston Sound is designing a large-scale immersive environment to be presented at SMPTE Technical Conference 2016, a Tech Opera highlighting the contributions of C. Francis Jenkins to the field.

Celebrating SMPTE

In conjunction with the Centennial Celebration and the honoring of inventor and founding SMPTE President C. Francis Jenkins, the components of the box pay tribute to his pioneering television broadcasts, which were done in silhouette only as bandwidth was so limited!
