Sound & Place: Czech Republic
Hugh first traveled to the Czech Republic to be part of a conference on Cultural Landscape at the Centre for the Future in Slavonice, creating a site-specific installation at the Old School, now known as Institut Slavonice. He has since made six trips back to the country, exploring the ins and outs of Bohemian culture and creating performance and installation projects in the landscape and in unusual architectural spaces. These projects have been principally supported by the Trust for Mutual Understanding, with organizational support from The Centre for the Future and the Telluride Institute.
Projects have included:
CelloHouse Old School Slavonice 2009 (video), a cello performance with the audience following as the performer moves from room to room, even climbing out the window, while initiating new musical gestures in each space;
Performances with diverse Czech improvisors at Skolska 28 in Praha;
An artist's residency at the ArtMill with a gallery show at Galerie Califia, Horazdovice (2011),
Music videos recorded in collaboration with Czech musicians and site consultant Dr. Vaclav Cilek (celebrated geologist and author), ranging from paleolithic caves to abandoned castles, factories and Soviet military bases (to be released winter 2011).
